Records of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. 1928 - 2008. Logbooks

This series consists of logbooks, most of which chronicle the daily activities of Vinal N. Edwards, marine scientist at the Woods Hole Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. The logbooks contain Edwards' daily entries indicating the specimens collected and the abundance or scarcity of fish populations. The logbooks also contain reports on weather conditions, temperatures, and water densities as well as statistics on fish, such as sizes and numbers caught in comparison to the previous season. There is one logbook, kept by the superintendent of the Woods Hole Station of the Office of the U.S. Commissioner on Fish and Fisheries, which documents the construction of a new building for the Woods Hole Laboratory, with daily entries citing the building's progress from 1884 to 1886. On page 145 of this logbook, a cryptogram about a dinner held on August 27, 1885, in honor of the new Laboratory, was deciphered on September 19, 1945 by biologist Rachel Carson.
